Well folks it's almost here, in the blink of an eye 2018 flew past us and now we're getting ready to usher in 2019! With a new year comes new things, new experiences, and new people. A new year also poses changes for businesses, in this post we'll cover a few ways to prepare for the new year.
1. Goal Setting
Almost every business person talks about setting goals for the new year, though only some sit down and do it. Taking the time now to set 2019 goals for your business is a great move.
Goals allow you to move forward with purpose, they allow every action you take to have meaning. If you find yourself not being able to capitalize on actions or feel like you're not building anything, have you set-out a goal?
The beauty of goal setting is that it can be different for everyone. You can choose to set out as many goals as you'd like, and you can break them into different time periods. At WunderTRE we have goals planned out yearly, quarterly, and monthly, but we're also working towards weekly, daily, and hourly goals as well.
Goals allow us to set exceptions for ourselves and others, they allow us to get our team on the same page, and the help cut down on frustration that stems from unfulfilled work.
2. Reviewing 2018
One of the biggest things you can do for 2019, is to look back to 2018. Having a year-in-review session with your team allows everyone to get involved in the discussion or what worked and what didn't.
When you look back, you'll be able to determine actions your business took that helped or hurt your company, thus allowing to repeat or not repeat those actions in the future. You hear the term "History repeats itself" often because it's true.
As 2018 ends, take the time to review it.
3. Winter Cleaning
Much like you do for your household in the spring, your business needs a good "cleaning" every once-and-a-while. What I mean by that is look at everything your business has a hand in and determine if that's still the right move.
As years progress, we add things in our business, whether it's expenses, projects, partnerships, etc. Most often we add things, but rarely do we evaluate them over the long-term. The new year is a good time to evaluate everything your business does and "clean" the things that are dirtying your business.
2019 is going to bring with it more technological advances. New ways to communicate, travel, and more will be discovered. Social Media will become bigger and more widely used than it already is, and Millennials and Gen Z with continue to increase their percentages in the marketplace.
If you find your business has an outdated image or an outdated way of doing things, now more than ever is the time to change that. The "This is the way we've always done things" excuse is going to haunt you if you don't change.
I don't want to throw out that you should modernize without stating some things you should focus on changing so here's a list.
- Your Logo - If you're logo is outdated, change it.
- Your Website - If your website looks like it was built in 2006 (even if it was built last year) change it. If you don’t have a website, get one.
- Facebook and Instagram - In 2019 the only social media you should focus on is Facebook and Instagram. LinkedIn may have a place in there too, but Facebook and Instagram first.
- Communications - How do people reach your business? Is it phone only? 2019 and beyond will be all about conversations. You need to have phone, email, contact form on your website, live chat, Facebook messaging, and Instagram DM'ing all as options for communication.
2019 is going to be a great year for business. If you implement these solutions, I have no doubt it will be even better!
