12 Reasons You Shouldn't Invest in Social Media Marketing

We get asked a lot if social media marketing is worth it. We believe it is 100% but, if you find yourself in one of the categories below, it's time to change things up. You are just doing it because...

What is Twitter

Twitter is described as an online newsfeed, a social networking site, a chatroom of sorts, a microblogging environment, and a real-time communications network.  Short messages of 140 characters are called “tweets” and are visible to anyone who follows you.   Text, photos, videos, and links can all be included in a tweet.  Followers can reply, creating real-time conversations.  This real-time environment has grown into a leading source of social and newsworthy information, coined as the “Twitterverse” and evolving into a system where creatives, designers, and businesses work well together.

Why Twitter Matters To My Business

Twitter is a great way to spread information quickly.  If you have something to say or if you are newsworthy, Twitter is your platform.  It’s more of an up-to-date “what’s happening right now” system, similar to an AP feed.
Twitter is great if you have a lot of info (you can almost not overshare).  Twitter users are expected to share a lot, possibly 10-20 times per day.  Twitter is for you if you:
        • have constant updates
        • host live q/a events
        • want live audience response
        • appreciate immediate live feedback
If your business wants to add Twitter to their budget, ads can have a further reach.  Many brands handle customer support over Twitter.  If done promptly, you can form strong client relationships through this readily responsive media.  Tweets that start public can move to private conversations.  Twitter provides the fastest way for consumers of any type to access customer service among the brands that are paying attention to Twitter.  And when you’re big enough, you HAVE to be paying attention to twitter because your customers WILL be posting there.

How Set Up Twitter For Success

First, you have to know that it does NOT behave like most other social media platforms.  It’s ruled by a crowd or tribe mindset.  On Twitter, communities are stronger, and biases are strong.  It’s where socialites come to rant.  Because of this, it’s the social media platform you want to use to diffuse problems with your brand or with the services you offer.  It’s the place you diffuse volatile situations.  It’s where people are the most honest.
Keeping this as your central goal will set your business up for success.  It separates you from those who do not use Twitter strategically.

How To Use Twitter

Use Twitter with extreme care.  With one tweet, you can shape your brand awareness drastically.  Tweet by tweet, you either build or erode trust.   If you can become someone’s friend (or better yet their momma) on Twitter by just lending an ear, replying, validating them, you can build great connections.  On the flip side, if you don’t have this awareness, you’ll still make strong perceptions, just not the ones you want.

Common Mistakes When Using Twitter

What should you avoid when using Twitter with your business?
(1)  Avoid getting in the Twitter game when you don’t need to be there.  Unless you are the news or have some news to share, you don’t need to be on Twitter.  It’s a wasted effort.
(2)  Avoid not posting enough.
(3)  Avoid using the wrong hashtags for your content.
(4)  Avoid using Twitter for Instagram posts.  Most people expect to get information from Twitter and inspiration and entertainment from Instagram.
(5)  Avoid not being social with other people’s accounts, not reaching out, not collaborating.  There’s a wealth of growth potential when you are social on social media.  It comes back around.
